D.C. Body-Worn Camera Law

On December 15, 2015, the District of Columbia Council passed the "Body-Worn Camera Program Amendment Act of 2015 (B21-0351)."  The bill is the result of months of engagement by the Office of Open Government and numerous transparency advocates with the Executive Office of the Mayor, the Metropolitan Police Department, and the Public Safety and Judiciary Committee, Chaired by Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. The law strikes the balance between allowing access to body camera video under the Freedom of Information Act, and ensuring the privacy and due process rights of the public are not jeopardized.
